At the beginning of my low-tox journey, I was searching for an all natural face wash to switch to. However, this was hard to come by. I just wanted something simple – and I wasn’t willing to spend an arm and a leg for a tiny bottle.

I had heard of the benefits of honey for your skin, and I just decided to go ahead and make my own!

I’ve been using this DIY face wash for about a year and I LOVE what it does for my skin. It appears brighter, and I definitely have less breakouts than before.

The ingredients are simple and accessible, and the process is very straightforward. Let’s get into it.

Honey Face Wash Ingredients

  • Honey: The star of the show. It’s no secret that honey is amazing for your body, both inside and out! It’s used in soaps, lotions, and even hair care products. It’s moisturizing, anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory, rich in antioxidants, tightening, and exfoliating. Make sure the honey you use is organic, raw, and unfiltered.
  • Castile soap: An all natural, vegetable based soap that’s free of chemicals and other synthetic ingredients. It’s also hypoallergenic, which is perfect for those with sensitive skin.
  • Castor oil: Antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and moisturizing. Make sure to use cold-pressed hexane-free castor oil.
  • Water: Filtered is best! Adding water helps to thin the mixture a bit so it’s easier to pump.
  • Essential oil(optional): I love adding 8-10 drops of essential oil to my face wash for added benefits and natural fragrance. Some castile soaps also already come with essential oils added to them, so if you’d like to save a step, go that route!

Essential Oil Ideas

Here are some ideas of essential oils you could add to your face wash for added benefits:

  • Lavender: Helps promote relaxation, balances out moisture levels in the skin, and can help reduce redness because of its anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Frankincense: Can help oily, acne-prone, and aging skin.
  • Geranium: Helps balance skin oils and hydration levels.
  • Peppermint: I love using peppermint in my face wash because of its cooling and invigorating effect. It helps wake me up!
  • Eucalyptus: Can help with putting dry, itchy, and painful skin at ease.
  • Patchouli: Anti-inflammatory and helps reduce pain – very helpful for those with eczema.
  • Ylang ylang: Can help even out skin pigmentation.
  • Myrrh: Rich in antioxidants and helps with circulation and brightness for aging skin.

If you have sensitive skin, make sure to avoid citrus essential oils and oils like peppermint that can cause irritation. Try using lavender or frankincense as these are more gentle on the skin.

Oil Substitutions

Don’t want to use castor oil? Here are some other options:

  • Argan oil: Packed with fatty acids that help with locking in moisture to hydrate the skin. It’s antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. Great for damaged, irritated, inflamed, and aging skin.
  • Jojoba oil: Antifungal, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial. It helps reduce redness and is full of nourishing minerals such as chromium, copper, and zinc.
  • Rosehip oil: Hydrates, softens, improves skin texture, and boosts collagen in the skin.
  • Carrot seed oil: Helps improve skin texture and reduce fine lines.

Equipment

Here’s a small list of equipment you’ll need to complete this DIY:

  • Liquid measuring cup
  • Measuring spoons
  • 12-14 oz soap dispenser bottle
  • Mixing spoon
  • Funnel(optional): If your liquid measuring cup has a pouring spout, that should work just fine!

Important Note

Remember to do a patch test on your skin before extensive use to make sure no breakouts or rashes occur!
